About CRPS
Understanding Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic neurological pain condition that often develops after an injury, surgery, fracture, or trauma. Although the original injury may heal, the nervous system continues sending pain signals that are far more severe than expected.
CRPS can affect anyone and often impacts the hands, arms, feet, or legs. Without early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, symptoms may progress and interfere with mobility, work, and everyday life.
At Chronic Pain Specialists, we focus on identifying CRPS early and providing individualized care to help patients regain comfort, function, and independence.
Do These Symptoms Sound Familiar?
CRPS symptoms can affect pain sensation, physical appearance, and movement. If these symptoms persist after an injury or surgery, a neurological evaluation is recommended. Common signs include:
Pain & Sensitivity
Severe burning or stabbing pain, extreme sensitivity to touch, and persistent discomfort that may seem disproportionate to the original injury.
Swelling & Skin Changes
Swelling, changes in skin color or temperature, excessive sweating, and changes in hair or nail growth in the affected area.
Movement & Muscle Changes
Joint stiffness, muscle weakness or spasms, difficulty moving the affected limb, and reduced coordination.
Experienced Neurological Care for Complex Pain
Meet Dr. Sudhir Aggarwal
Dr. Sudhir Aggarwal, MD, PhD, is a board-certified neurologist with extensive experience diagnosing and treating Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and other chronic neurological pain disorders.
He believes successful treatment begins with listening carefully to each patient’s story, performing a comprehensive evaluation, and developing a personalized care plan that addresses both pain and function.
Through a combination of advanced therapies, compassionate care, and ongoing support, Dr. Aggarwal is dedicated to helping patients achieve meaningful improvements in their quality of life.
Our Treatment Approach
Personalized Care for Lasting Relief
Every patient experiences CRPS differently. That's why we create customized treatment plans based on your symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals.
Comprehensive Evaluation
We perform a detailed neurological assessment to confirm the diagnosis, evaluate symptom severity, and identify contributing factors.
Physical Rehabilitation
Movement is an important part of recovery. We work alongside rehabilitation specialists to improve circulation, strength, flexibility, and function while helping reduce pain sensitivity.
Medication Management
We use evidence-based medications to help manage nerve pain, inflammation, muscle spasms, and other symptoms while minimizing reliance on opioid medications.
Advanced Infusion Therapy
For selected patients with persistent CRPS symptoms, advanced therapies such as Lidocaine Infusions and Ketamine Infusions may provide meaningful pain relief as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Long-Term Support
Our goal is not simply to reduce pain—we focus on improving mobility, restoring function, and helping patients return to the activities they enjoy.
Experience. Compassion. Personalized Care.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)?
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic neurological pain condition that develops when pain from an injury continues long after the injured tissues have healed.
A defining characteristic of CRPS is that the pain is significantly more severe than would normally be expected from the original injury.
There are two forms of CRPS:
CRPS Type I
CRPS Type I develops after injuries such as fractures, sprains, or soft tissue trauma without direct nerve injury.
CRPS Type II
CRPS Type II occurs after a specific peripheral nerve has been damaged.
Although the causes differ, both forms produce similar symptoms and require specialized neurological care.
What symptoms develop due to Complex Regional Pain Syndrome?
Persistent pain is the hallmark symptom of CRPS and most commonly affects one arm or one leg. The pain often begins in the hand or foot before spreading to the entire limb.
Many patients describe the pain as:
- Burning pain
- Sharp, stabbing sensations
- Pins-and-needles sensations
- Extreme sensitivity to touch
The affected area may also experience changes in blood flow and nerve function, leading to:
- Swelling
- Stiff joints
- Changes in skin color
- Changes in skin temperature
- Changes in skin texture
- Excessive sweating
- Abnormal hair growth
- Changes in nail growth
As CRPS progresses, muscle weakness, spasms, loss of coordination, and muscle wasting may also occur.
How is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome treated?
Because CRPS affects multiple body systems, treatment is individualized and often combines several therapies designed to reduce pain and restore function.
Physical Therapy
Structured physical therapy helps improve circulation, maintain muscle strength, restore flexibility, and improve coordination. Rehabilitation also helps reduce the nervous system changes that contribute to chronic pain and hypersensitivity.
Medications
Dr. Aggarwal may prescribe medications to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, control muscle spasms, and improve nerve function.
For selected patients with persistent symptoms, intravenous Lidocaine and Ketamine infusions may be recommended. These advanced therapies have been shown to provide meaningful pain relief for many individuals living with CRPS.
Treatment plans are carefully tailored to each patient's symptoms, medical history, and response to therapy.
